City Karlovy Vary

– the world famous spa town
was founded by Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor in 1370. The end of the 19th century determined the final architectural outlook of Karlovy Vary surrounded by romantic hilly countryside. Today it is the largest spa town in the Czech Republic. Karlovy Vary is also known for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and the popular Czech liqueur Karlovarská Becherovka. The glass manufacturer Moser is located in Karlovy Vary. The city also gave its name to the famous delicacy known as “Carlsbad plums”. These plums are candied in hot syrup, then halved and stuffed into dried damsons to give them a very intense flavour.
The fame of Karlovy Vary has spread into the whole world thanks to its mineral springs. The most prestigious visitor to Karlovy Vary was Peter The Great. Over the centuries, the town has been privileged to receive many famous visitors like, Goethe, Ludwig von Beethoven and Chopin. There are 12 healing springs rising in the spa town. Their basic compositions are similar but they differ in temperature and the amount of carbon dioxide, and that is why their effects are different as well. The strongest is the spring Vridlo, rising from the depth of 3000 metres. The temperature reaches 73° C. The temperature of the other springs is around 40° C. The springs cure mainly metabolic disorders; they are also used for inhalations and baths.
